Should I choose this subject?

You should choose this subject if you are contemplating a career that involves any aspect of Art or Design, as A Level Art is an essential requirement for any Art and Design course.  Or, if you simply enjoy Art and find it fulfilling and relaxing, as it is an excellent course to complement your other subjects and will enhance your aesthetic understanding of the world.

What is it about?

The A Level course encourages you to work as an artist in your own right and builds on the work done at GCSE level. You will be taught to use different media and techniques and will be taken on art trips to galleries and museums.

At AS level you will complete two units.  Unit 1 is coursework, Unit 2 is an 8 hour examination (externally set assignment), for which you will have at least 6 weeks of preparation time.  At A2 level you will complete Unit 3, coursework, and Unit 4 a 12 hour examination with 6 weeks to prepare.

How will it be studied?

You will be taught to use a variety of new media and techniques and will be supported by both members of staff.  You will be encouraged to develop your work independently using your coursework sketchbook to record your progress before producing a final outcome.  Gallery and museum visits are an essential part of the course.  You will be expected to spend some time in the Sixth Studio during your free periods as it is not always practical to take artwork home.

How will art be useful in the future?

If you are planning to pursue a career in Art of Design your art teachers will help you produce a portfolio to submit when applying to an Arts Foundation, BA or other Art course.
