Should I choose this subject?
Business Studies gives the opportunity to gain a critical understanding of organisations and the markets they serve. Students gain a range of skills, including decision-making using business information. The subject combines well with languages, sciences and the arts. No previous knowledge is required to undertake AS/A2 Business Studies. You will, however, need to be organised and remain aware of current affairs through media such as television, radio and newspapers.
What is it about?
At AS Level you will gain an appreciation of the nature of business, learn how businesses can be classified, see what the objectives of business may be and consider other influences on business. You will also study the role of accounting and finance and the importance of marketing. At A2 you will learn to appreciate how business objectives and strategy are formulated and applied. You will also consider how a range of external influences impact on businesses as well as learning how organisations deal with change.
How will it be studied?
Theoretical course content comprises core lessons, student-led activities and presentations. Reference is made to cross-curricular content with emphasis placed upon the application of modern business theory to current affairs. e-learning is facilitated through electronic whiteboards and Internet research. There are opportunities to gain a better understanding of real world businesses through case studies.
How will business studies be useful in the future?
Whatever you do, you will either employ or be employed. You may pursue a degree in Business. The subject combines well with modern languages, which is particularly important with the increasing influence of the EU and world trade. Many universities now offer degrees in International Business Management. ICT can be used to support a communications or technology based career. Sciences are also useful to those seeking careers in technology, medicine, research or engineering.
