Should I choose this subject?

Economics gives the opportunity to gain an understanding of economic problems such as globalisation, poverty and pollution. It is recognised as an academic subject that combines well with Mathematics and History for future studies. No previous knowledge is required to undertake AS/A2 Economics. You will, however, need to be organised with your notes and remain aware of current affairs through media such as television, radio and newspapers.

What is it about?

At AS Level you will learn about competitive markets and managing the economy.  There is an emphasis on understanding information problems in markets and on factors influencing the demand and supply of labour.  You will also study the causes and costs of economic growth for developed and developing economies.  At A2 you will build on the knowledge gained at AS Level by studying business economics and the global economy.  This includes studying the way governments use polices to achieve their macro- and micro-economic objectives and international trade.

How will it be studied?

Theoretical course content comprises core lessons, student-led activities and presentations. Reference is made to cross-curricular content with emphasis placed upon the application of modern economic theory to current affairs. e-learning is facilitated through electronic whiteboards and Internet research. There are opportunities to gain a better understanding of real world businesses.

How will economics be useful in the future?

You may pursue a degree in Economics. The subject combines well with modern languages, which is particularly important with the increasing influence of the EU and world trade. Many universities now offer degrees in International Business Management. Mathematics is also useful combination as you will learn to analyse and present data in an objective manner. History can also help you to understand how and why the world has shaped itself into what it is today. Economics is an academically versatile subject and will be particularly useful to those looking for a business based career or that of law, accountancy, finance, medicine, politics or journalism.
