Should I choose this subject?

If you are perceptive and analytical, enjoy reading and are keen to explore all the important issues of life, then A-level English Literature is for you.  The course is both stimulating and rewarding for those interested in literature and its historical, cultural and social context.

What is it about?

The approach to study is similar to GCSE, as we read and discuss texts in small groups, which creates a more informal atmosphere.  You are reading more challenging texts, exploring them in greater detail and building on your skills of analysis.

How will it be studied?

At AS, you will be required to study six texts: three (one of each genre) for close study and three as wider reading.  There will be a coursework component for one unit, which will be internally assessed and one examination at the conclusion of the course.

The requirements for A2 allow a degree of freedom in terms of text choices for the coursework and examination units in order to construct a coherent course of study.  You will be expected to analyse a range of reading materials which span the centuries.

How will English Literature be useful in the future?

There are literally thousands of English and English Literature courses to which you could apply with this A2 and it can be combined with nearly every other subject – even Mathematics!  As a broadening subject for scientists and medical students, it is highly prized because it proves a high level of articulacy, perception and powers of analysis.  Career choices for English graduates include journalism, television and radio, publishing, advertising and any other job which requires some creativity.  Also valued will be your communication skills which underpin many jobs in the business world.
