Should I choose this subject?
The subject should be considered to be one of the most important subjects in the twenty first century in the light of globalisation of industry and global warming etc. Geography can be studied with a wide range of subjects in the sixth form: sciences, languages and humanities and is also accepted by some medical schools as the 3rd A level. It is a subject that fosters flexible thinking and it provides a basis for life-long learning.
What is it about?
The new syllabus shows the usual study of both the physical environment and the human environment covering such topics as hydrological systems, deserts, population change, health issues and other topics such as contemporary conflicts and challenges.
How will it be studied?
A variety of teaching methods are used to include creative work, discussion, decision-making, fieldwork etc. ICT, satellite imagery, aerial photography and map work which are all incorporated into the teaching strategy. Fieldwork is still carried out but students no longer need to submit their investigation to be marked.
How will geography be useful in the future?
Compared to other subjects, geography graduates are among the most employable. They possess the skills that employers look for. This in part is due to the fact that geography combines a knowledge of science and an understanding of the arts.
