Should I choose this subject?

You will need at least an A grade in GCSE German if you are to succeed at AS/A2 level. You will cover a variety of topics such as Media, Healthy Living, Lifestyle, Popular Culture, Family and Relationships. You will learn to discuss and develop your opinions on controversial issues in German. You should enjoy learning other languages, want to learn about other cultures and want to chat and argue (i.e. communicate in different registers) in a foreign language. You should be interested in language and structures, be aware of current affairs both in the UK and abroad and take pleasure in reading newspapers and listening to the news.

What is it about?

AS and A2 German covers many issues such as racism, unemployment, abortion, homelessness, the environment, the role of women, as well as films and literature.

How will it be studied?

You will learn German through oral work, listening, reading and writing. You will watch video clips, DVDs, you will use the computers and the Internet and you will read books, texts, newspapers and magazines.

How will German be useful in the future?

With a degree in German (or another subject and German) a great number of careers are open to you and you develop very marketable skills. Your language will form a major part of your work in a career such as teaching or translating but could also be of significant importance in a variety of careers such as engineering, scientific research, marketing, economics, business etc. Many jobs and professions require or prefer candidates who have knowledge of a foreign language, who have travelled and who can work in the global market. If you have a modern foreign language as part of your degree, you will be in a strong position to gain a good job in the future.
