If you study Latin, you will look at the culture of Rome through the words of those who lived it.

You will develop skills of literary criticism, similar to those required in the study of other languages.  You will learn how to analyse a text for deeper meanings and how to comment persuasively on your interpretation of a text.  Your essay skills will develop as you learn how to formulate a clear, cogent argument. Latin also helps to develop one’s understanding of English, with obvious benefits in grammar, the broadening of vocabulary and the structure of essays.

Latin combines well with subjects such as English, Modern Languages, Classical Civilisation and History; however, it also tends to appeal to a logical way of thinking such as that often found in Sciences and Mathematics and offers a useful balance with these.

You will need to have studied Latin in GCSE to take Latin for AS / A2.

What is it about?

In both AS and A2, you will study Latin authors (such as Virgil, Ovid and Cicero) in detail, as well as continuing to improve your translation skills. While studying these texts, you will also cover background topics such as history and politics relevant to the writings of these authors.

How will it be studied?

The texts are translated and discussed in class; pupils are expected to contribute and substantiate their opinions in class debate.  Personal opinion and expression are expected and encouraged.

How will Latin be useful in the future?

Latin has shown itself to be useful in many ways.  It improves one’s ability in English and other languages, as well as formulating a structured way of thinking and analysing materials.  It is well respected in universities and credited for the intellectual rigour which it requires, and can act as a differentiating guide during the university selection process.
