Should I choose this subject?
Mathematics is a course which is challenging but interesting. It builds on the work covered at GCSE but also involves new concepts. It serves as a useful support to many other qualifications as well as being a sought after qualification for the workplace and many courses in Higher Education, including Business Studies, Psychology, Science and Management Studies to name but a few. Mathematicians have logical minds, enjoy problem solving and derive pleasure from elegant and concise solutions.
The course in Mathematics is divided into three branches:
Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics.
What is it about?
AS Level year 12 – Students will follow three modules leading to an award in AS Mathematics: C1, C2 and S1.
Core Mathematics (C1): Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry; sequences and series; differentiation; integration.
Core Mathematics (C2): Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry; sequences and series; trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; integration.
Statistics (S1): Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution.
How will it be studied?
Assessment: Students will be continually assessed throughout the year at the end of which they will be entered for all three modules. Progression to A2 is dependent on satisfactory progress throughout the year and a minimum grade D at AS with a minimum Grade D in both C1 and C2.
A2 Level Year 13 – In Year 13 students take another three modules: C3, C4 and M1 leading to an award in A2 Level Mathematics.
Core Mathematics (C3): Algebra and functions; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms; differentiation; numerical methods.
Core Mathematics (C4): Algebra and functions; coordinate geometry in the (x,y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; integration; vectors.
Mechanics (M1): Mathematical models; vectors, kinematics of a particle moving in a straight line; dynamics of a particle moving in a straight line or plane; statics of a particle; moments.
Assessment: Students will be assessed throughout the year and will sit C3 in January and C4 and M1 at the end of Year 13.
