Should I choose this subject?

Textiles is a creative subject promoting the development of innovative ideas, where you can apply both Art and Textiles skills.  You will need to have a good artistic ability and be able to show that you are dedicated to this creative and challenging course.

What is it about?

Independent research is crucial in order to build upon an appreciation of your personal interpretation of topics. Surface embellishment is undertaken in order to interpret findings and represent inspiration taken from the work of others artists.  Practical techniques are learnt and developed throughout the course and presented in a sketchbook to represent your individual style.  A wide variety of fabrics, materials and techniques are explored and developed to lead to a final outcome.

How will it be studied?

Research is conducted using both primary and secondary resources such as drawing from direct observation, photography, the internet, books and magazines to build up a factual understanding of the topic being studied.  Gallery and museum visits are an essential part of the course as candidates are required to show a good understanding for the work of artists and designers.  Practical work is undertaken in class including sampling and work towards the final piece.  Research is compiled mostly in your own time and is checked as work progresses.  The examination for AS is held over one day for 5 hours. There is an eight week preparation period for this externally set assignment. A2 also has an eight week period for preparatory studies and the examination is held over 3 days (15 hours).

How will textiles be useful in the future?

Many students use their Textiles experience to study such courses as Marketing, Business with Textiles, Fashion and Design and Arts Foundation.  This is an enjoyable and challenging subject, which could lead to an exciting career in the future.
